Several rising sophomores on the ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ Warrior baseball team are sharpening their skills this summer by participating in collegiate baseball leagues around the country.

Eight Warriors are playing summer league ball in five states, from North Dakota to Kentucky.

Led by the Lady Warrior softball team, six ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ varsity sports teams earned National Junior College Athletic Association Academic Team of the Year Honorable Mention awards for having met the grade-point average requirement of 3.00 or better for the 2017-18 academic year.

With a 3.67 team GPA, the ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ women’s softball team led all softball programs in the 15-team Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges and finished tied for second among all softball programs in the NJCAA.

The ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ Workforce Development Center will offer courses in Social Media Marketing, First Steps-The Process of Starting a Small Business, and Understanding Business Financials during the month of July.

Seventy-five ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ student-athletes have been honored by either the National Junior College Athletic Association or the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges, or both organizations, for their academic performance during the 2017-18 academic year.

In all, 45 ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ student-athletes were recognized by the NJCAA and 75 were honored by the MACJC. East Central was third among all 15 community and junior colleges in Mississippi in the number of student-athletes honored by the NJCAA.

Eric Neel, who has coached high school girls’ fast pitch softball teams to five state championships in Mississippi, has been selected as the new softball coach at ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ in Decatur.

Representatives from ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ will be visiting locations throughout the district this summer to help prospective students learn more about the MI-BEST and Project Pathway programs, both of which help students learn or enhance job skills needed in today’s businesses and industries.

Whitney Amis, MI-BEST instructor, and Freda Thompson, who serves as navigator for the Project Pathway program, will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and free lunch will be provided on the following schedule:

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ Golf Coach Chris Clark has added another honor to the Warriors’ highly successful 2017-18 golf season, this time being named the Mississippi Association of Coaches Community College Golf Co-Coach of the Year.

Clark will be honored at the MAC Hall of Fame Banquet June 22 in Jackson.

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ Offering Weekday Orientation Sessions Through August 2

New and transfer students planning to attend ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ in fall 2018 can take advantage of Weekday Orientation sessions this summer on the Decatur campus.

Weekday Orientation is available Monday through Thursday from June 11 to Aug. 2 at either 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The college will be closed July 4 for the Independence Day holiday. Fall 2018 classes begin on Monday, Aug. 13.
