The ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ Lady Warriors picked up a big MACCC win on Saturday, Jan. 15, as they downed the Hinds Lady Bulldogs, 77-67, in Utica. The win is the first conference win of the year for ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ and moves the Lady Warriors to 5-6 overall and to 1-3 in conference play. Hinds falls to 0-9, 0-4. The win makes eight straight victories over the Lady Bulldogs for ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ, dating back to 2018.
The first quarter was back-and-forth after a slow start from the Lady Warriors. ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ dug deep and found some rhythm later in the frame to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to just one, 15-14, after a (Dallas, Texas) putback on a missed free throw in the closing seconds.
The second quarter saw the Lady Warriors pick up the lead after capitalizing on some trips to the free-throw line and great steal and layup from (Brighton, Tenn.). At the five-minute mark in the second, ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ led by three, 25-24. A big three-point play and a deep three-pointer from (McComb) grew the Lady Warrior lead to five, 31-26, later in the quarter. At the break, ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ was on top, 33-29.
Late in the third, the Lady Bulldogs rallied and closed in on the ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ lead, tying the game at 39-39. A big shot from (Jackson) put the Lady Warriors back in front, and after trading baskets for a couple of minutes, Jones grew the ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ lead with an old-school, three-point play. Going into the fourth, ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ led 47-44.
Some early baskets, including a huge three-pointer from (Philadelphia), in the fourth quarter grew the Lady Warrior lead to 10, 54-44, with just eight minutes to play. Hinds hit back and whittled down the lead, but midway through the final quarter, (Philadelphia) nailed a three-pointer to push the lead to 10 once again, 65-55. Hinds never threw in the towel and cut the game back to single digits, but solid free-throw shooing and some timely rebounds down the stretch allowed ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ to hang on for a 77-67 victory.
Jones led the Lady Warriors with 19 points, while Denson came off the bench for a career-high 16 points. Scott rounded out double-digit scorers for ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ as she netted 15.
The Lady Warriors are on the road again this Tuesday, Jan. 18, as the team travels to Meridian to take on the Lady Eagles to continue MACCC play. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
