ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ Tennis Falls Second Consecutive Day to Nationally Ranked Opponents

For the second consecutive day, the nationally ranked ÐÓ°ÉÊÓÆµ tennis teams found themselves on the courts with two other nationally ranked teams. This time it was Marion Military Institute, and the hosts of Marion, Ala., grabbed a pair of victories Saturday, Feb. 9.

The No. 14 Marion women picked up an 8-1 win over the No. 20 Lady Warriors, while the No. 13 Marion Tigers won 6-3 over the No. 21 East Central men.

A day earlier, East Central was swept in matches against the No. 18 Gulf Coast women and the No. 19 Gulf Coast men.

With the losses, the Lady Warriors are 1-2 on the season and the Warriors are 0-3. It was the season opener for the Marion Lady Tigers. The Marion men are 2-0.

Women’s Doubles Results:
MMI’s Anna Waller and Kennedy Greenwalt defeated EC’s Natalia Beltran (Bogota, Colombia) and Alejandra Vargas (Bogota, Colombia), 8-1; MMI’s Ksenia Vasilyev and Kathryn Risner defeated EC’s Kayla Baucum (Newton County) and Marla Graham (Newton County Academy), 8-0; and MMI’s Gianna Azzaro and Shandreika Crocker defeated EC’s Laila Sisson (Neshoba Central) and Courtney Gill (Leake Academy), 8-6.

Women’s Singles Results:
MMI’s Vasilyev defeated EC’s Beltran, 6-2, 7-5; MMI’s Waller defeated EC’s Vargas by default; MMI’s Greenwalt defeated EC’s Ali Grace Walker (Newton County), 6-2, 6-1; MMI’s Risner defeated EC’s Graham, 6-0, 6-0; MMI’s Azzaro defeated EC’s Gill, 6-3, 6-2; and EC’s Sisson defeated MMI’s Crocker, 6-3, 6-3.

Men’s Doubles Results:
MMI’s Andrew Branicki Jr. and Joseph Tanjuatco defeated EC’s Chris Lawrance (York, Western Australia) and Isaac Santitto (Innisfail, Queensland, Australia), 8-2; EC’s Dylan Barnett (Newton County) and Peyton Chaney (Newton County) defeated MMI’s Sean Dreher and Isaac Magee, 9-8; and MMI’s Dominique Ingram and Austin Taylor defeated EC’s Jacob Gardner (Wayne County) and Rhy Elizar (Florence), 8-1.

Men’s Singles Results:
EC’s Lawrance defeated MMI’s Branicki, 6-4, 6-1; MMI’s Dreher defeated Santitto, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8); MMI’s Tanjuatco defeated EC’s Barnett, 6-1, 6-2; MMI’s Ingram defeated EC’s Chaney, 6-4, 6-7 (10-5); MMI’s Magee defeated EC’s Elizar, 6-1, 6-4; and MMI’s Taylor defeated EC’s Gardner, 6-1, 6-3.

The East Central teams will now host Copiah-Lincoln at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Southwest at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14. The Lady Warriors will play Snead State (Ala.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Tennis Complex on campus.
