The �Ӱ��Ƶ family mourns the passing of Workforce Development Coordinator and �Ӱ��Ƶ Warrior golf coach, Chris Clark.

Clark, 59, of Decatur passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022, at Laird Hospital in Union. He was born July 27, 1963, in Kosciusko, MS.

"We are all shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Chris," said �Ӱ��Ƶ President Dr. Brent Gregory. "Chris was not only a great co-worker and coach, but he was a friend to everyone on campus and his genuine personality will be missed by all at the college and in the community."

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, November 27, 2022, at Clarke Venable Baptist Church, Decatur, MS. Visitation will be held Saturday, November 26, 2022, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Newton County Funeral Home North (9998 Hwy 15 North, Newton, MS). Rev. Mark Vincent and Rev. Kelvin Boone will officiate. Newton County Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Chris graduated from Decatur High School in 1981 and was known as a gifted athlete, fierce competitor, and one of the nicest guys in the school. He played basketball and baseball in high school, golf, baseball, and tennis at �Ӱ��Ƶ, and was inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame. Chris graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1985 earning the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree. Chris worked for La-z-Boy and �Ӱ��Ƶ where he coached the golf team and worked in the Workforce development department where he oversaw training opportunities for district businesses and companies.

Chris enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and investing in the lives of students at his Church, Clarke Venable Baptist Church. Clark served as a deacon and often chaperoned student events such as Centrifuge, Mission Fuge, and Disciple Now. Chris also taught the third and fourth-grade boys' Sunday School class at CVBC.

Chris is preceded in death by his father, Joe Clark; grandparents, Alton and Mattie Lee Johnson and Marzene and Odessa Clark. He is survived by his mother Carolyn Clark; wife, Sandy Hemmingway Clark; son, Luke Clark; daughter, Olivia Clark; brothers Kevin Clark and Stan Clark (Melba); nephews, Thomas and Andrew Clark; nieces, Riley Kate and Dru Sheppard; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shannon and Johnny Sheppard; father-in-law, Wayne Hemmingway (Marie); mother-in-law, Sue Hemmingway.

Pallbearers will be Chris Vance, Scotty Russell, Chris Harris, Cole Harris, Graham Clarke, Robert Munn, Joel Nelson, and Roger Whitlock.

Honorary pallbearers are Michael Alexander, Joseph Knight, Ronnie Westbrook, Don Munn, Jeff Ezelle, Scott Hill, and all current and former �Ӱ��Ƶ golfers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Clarke Venable Baptist Church Children's ministry.

The �Ӱ��Ƶ Warrior golf team finished fourth in a seven-team field at the William Carey University Showcase November 8. The event, a one-round tournament, featured all MACCC schools, with Meridian winning the event and Gulf Coast and Co-Lin rounding out the top three.

East Central's Gage Miller led the charge for the Warriors as he earned co-medalist honors tying for the lowest round of the day, a one-under, 71. Bryce Denley also finished top 10 as tied for ninth with a two-over, 74.

Max Guzhvin carded a 79 for a top-20 finish, while Peyton Herrington and Lane Moore rounded out �Ӱ��Ƶ's players with rounds of 88 and 89, respectively.

The event, which did not count as a MACCC event, wrapped the fall portion of the 2022-23 season for �Ӱ��Ƶ's golf team.

The �Ӱ��Ƶ golf team finished ninth at the MGCCC Invitational this week. The three-round event, held at the Windance Country Club, featured six MACCC schools in Gulf Coast, Co-Lin, Meridian, East Miss, �Ӱ��Ƶ, and Pearl River. The schools were joined by Calhoun Community College, Andrew CC, Coastal Alabama, and Rend Lake College.

MGCCC won the event with an 875, while Co-Lin and Meridian finished second and third.

East Central's Gage Miller led the Warriors with a T-26th finish after carding a three-day 236, while Max Guzhvin moved up 13 spots late in the tournament with a third-round 74 to finish in 31st after posting a 240. Bryce Denley was tied for 32nd after coming in one stroke behind his teammate with a 241, and River Maskew tied for 40th with a 246. Peyton Herrington and Lane Moore rounded out the Warriors with rounds of 261 and 265.

The event concludes the fall portion of the 2022-23 golf season as the team will return to action at the Oaks in Pass Christian on Monday, February 6, and Tuesday, February 7 for the fourth MACCC event of the season.

The �Ӱ��Ƶ Warrior golf team posted another top-five finish last week as the team tied for fifth in the third MACCC event of the year Oct. 10-11. The tournament, hosted by Meridian Community College and played at Briarwood Country Club, featured an 11-team field.

Mississippi Gulf Coast won the event, while East Mississippi finished second. Meridian and Co-Lin finished third and fourth, while the Warriors and Pearl River finished tied in fifth.

The Warriors shot a 324 in the first round and backed it up with a 321 on the second day for a two-day total of 645.

East Central's Gage Miller and Max Guzhvin both finished in the top ten as the duo carded total scores of 158. Miller shot an 80 and 78, while Guzhvin shot a 76 and 82. Bryce Denley posted an 82, 79 (161) which was good for a 16th-place finish, while River Maskew posted an 87, 82 (169). Peyton Herrington and Lane Moore rounded out the Warriors with rounds of 171 and 179.

The Warriors are back on the links on Monday, Oct. 24, and Tuesday, Oct. 25, as the team travels to Gulfport for the Gulf Coast Invitational at Windance Golf Course.

The �Ӱ��Ƶ golf team had a great outing in the second MACCC event of the year with a T-5th finish in the Gulf Region Preview hosted by Copiah-Lincoln at Beau Pre' Country Club in Natchez September 29-30.

The event, the second of the year for the Warriors, was played on the par-72 course at 6,993 yards. The Warriors finished the opening round in second to last place with a 338 team total, before bouncing back in round two with a stellar 316, the third lowest team total of the day, to move the team up four spots at 654.

Mississippi Gulf Coast won the event with a 589, while Meridian finished second with a 607. Itawamba rounded out the top three with 624.

Individually, �Ӱ��Ƶ's Bryce Denley (Mandeville, La.) led the Warriors with a 151 after shooting rounds of 75 (+3) and 76 (+4), just two strokes away from landing All-Tournament team honors. Gage Miller (Anniston, Ala.) shot a 161 after carding an 85 (+13) in the first round and bouncing back with a 76 (+4) in the second for a 24th overall finish. Lane Moore (Collinsville) shot an 89, 80 for a two-day total of 169, good for a 34th overall finish, while Peyton Herrington (Meridian) shot an 87, 84, 171 for a T-36th finish. Max Guzhvin (Ocean Springs) and River Maskew (Lucedale) rounded out the Warriors with totals of 173 and 175, respectively.

The Warriors are back on the links on Monday, October 10, and Tuesday, October 11, as the team travels to Meridian for the third MACCC event held at Briarwood Country Club.

�Ӱ��Ƶ alumnus Kevin Bounds of Brandon has donated golf simulation equipment to his alma mater to be used in a proposed indoor practice facility for the men’s golf team.

A native of Newton, Bounds played golf for �Ӱ��Ƶ during the 1989-90 season. Among the golf simulation equipment donated was a launch monitor, 55-inch TV, iPad, and camera.

He made the donation in memory of his father, the late Rodney Bounds of Newton, who was a graduate of East Central and a former member of the college’s Board of Trustees.

�Ӱ��Ƶ Head Men’s Golf Coach Chris Clark said the equipment will be used in a proposed indoor practice facility for the Warrior golfers, which will be located in an existing building on the Decatur campus. A fundraising campaign is underway to fully furnish the location, which will be used as a practice option for the team during inclement weather. The inside will include a state-of-the-art golf simulator, putting green, locker room, strength and conditioning equipment, and restrooms.

East Central's Gage Miller, a sophomore golfer from Anniston, Ala., led the Warriors to a fourth-place finish in the first MACCC golf event of the 2022-23 season. The tournament, held at Shiloh Ridge in Corinth, marked the start of the season for all schools. Gulf Coast won the event, while Meridian finished second. The Warriors were fourth, just seven strokes, behind Itawamba in third.

Miller lit up the links with a 74 (+2) in the opening round, before backing it up with a 71 (-1) on the second day. The two-day 145 was good for a seventh-place individual finish, and just a couple strokes out of landing All-Tournament Team honors.

The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 29, and Friday, Sept. 30, for the second MACCC event of the year. The tournament will be held at Beau Pre in Natchez and hosted by Co-Lin.

The �Ӱ��Ƶ golf team had a strong showing in the first tournament of 2022 as the Warriors carded a 609 at Shiloh Ridge in Corinth Sept. 12-13. The score landed the Warriors a 4th place finish in the 11-team field.

"First off, congratulations to Gage [Miller] on his performance and we are very proud of him," said �Ӱ��Ƶ head golf coach Chris Clark. "Our other guys faced some adversity during their rounds and battled through it, which enabled us to finish in fourth place. They could have easily allowed their rounds to go the other way, but I'm extremely proud of how they handled themselves."

Conditions in Corinth and on the course were stellar as the Warriors teed off the season during the first cold snap of the year.

�Ӱ��Ƶ's Gage Miller (Anniston, Ala.) led the charge for the Warriors with a 74 (+2) in the opening round before backing it up with a 71 (-1) in the second for a two-day total of 145. The low score landed Miller a tied-7th finish individually.

River Maskew (Lucedale) shot a 75 (+3) on Monday and an 80 (+8) in the second for a 155, while Lane Moore (Collinsville) posted scores of 79 (+7) and 77 (+5) for a 156. Bryce Denley (Mandeville, La.) and Max Guzhvin (Ocean Springs) matched their teammate with scores of 156 as well with rounds of 78 (+6), 78 (+6) for Denley and 77 (+5), 79 (+7) for Guzhvin.

Peyton Herrington (Meridian) rounded out the Warriors with rounds of 86 and 81 for a total of 167.

The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 29, and Friday, Sept. 30, for the second MACCC event of the year. The tournament will be held at Beau Pre in Natchez and hosted by Co-Lin.

The �Ӱ��Ƶ golf team returns to the links in 2022 after a strong showing in their first season back in 2021 after a multi-year break with the program.

The Warriors posted two top-five finishes last season – the ICC Invitational and the Warriors home event at the Dancing Rabit in Philadelphia.

"We are definitely looking to improve upon our performance last year," said �Ӱ��Ƶ head golf coach Chris Clark. "We have four guys returning from last year's team who have a season of experience under their belt along with three incoming freshmen that we are expecting good things from."

Returning for the Warriors in 2022 for sophomore campaigns are Bryce Denley (Mandeville, La.), River Maskew (Lucedale), Gage Miller (Anniston, Ala.), and Lee Hill (Decatur).

Denley and Maskew are no strangers to success as the duo represented the Warriors in the NJCAA DII Gulf District Championship as individuals to close out their freshmen seasons. Denley has a solid all-around game, and has the mental fortitude to grind out a good score, while Maskew is known for his length off the tee which often puts him in positions to make birdies.

Miller is another player that is talented in all facets of the game with the ability to go low on the scorecard. Hill, a lefty, played his first year of competitive golf last year and has loads of natural ability. The multi-sport athlete is another sophomore the coaching staff will be expecting good things from.

Joining the group of talented sophomores are three freshmen that look to make an immediate impact on the Warrior lineup. These freshmen include Max Guzhvin (Ocean Springs), Peyton Herrington (Meridian), and Lane Moore (Collinsville). Guzhvin's game is talented in all areas and is a solid ball striker, while Herrington is a fairway finder with the ability to roll the ball well on the greens. Moore rounds out the talented group of newcomers with a talented golf swing and a tremendous upside.

"Our biggest strength this season is of course the experience we have on the team," said Clark, "but along with that is more depth of players who have the ability to shoot lower scores."

�Ӱ��Ƶ will play in at least seven events this season with the 36-hole, two-day events split between the fall and spring semesters.

"Finishing in the top half of our league would be a baseline goal for us, but striving to improve each tournament and challenging ourselves to climb up the ladder of our league is our desire," said Clark.

The Warriors are in action in September at Shiloh Ridge in Corinth on Monday the 12th and Tuesday the 13th, as well as Thursday the 29th and Friday the 30th at Beau Pre Country Club in Natchez. Fans can find a complete 2022-23 schedule at ecccathletics.com.
